The Benefits Of Maqui Berry Juice And How They Can Help You

Rachel Lee | December 25, 2009

If you are curious about the benefits of maqui berry juice, you may not know where to look or how to find the information you need. The facts can be hard to separate from much of the hype about this latest “super food”. However, you should know that there are a number of very real benefits from these berries and learning what they are can help you stay as healthy as possible.

Maqui berries come from the patagonian areas of South America where it has been eaten by the residents for many years. It is a small, round purple berry that is somewhat sweet in flavor. Many people enjoy eating maqui berries either as part of a regular diet or as a cure for many different ailments. It has been used in traditional medicine to fight many different health problems including ulcers, sore throats, diarrhea and fevers.

One of the things that makes maqui berries such a good food source is its antioxidant properties. Antioxidants are nutrients which help to repair the damage to skin and other bodily cells that are caused by free radicals. When certain chemicals oxidize they give off free radicals which steal electrons from other cells. These free radicals can contribute to disease and many of the visible signs of aging.

There are other berries such as raspberries, blueberries and blackberries all of which contain antioxidants. However, maqui berries contain much higher levels of these antioxidants and that is one of the things which make them such a valuable addition to the diet. Often, the amount of antioxidants in a particular food are measured in ORAC units, and maqui berries have the highest number of ORAC units of any berry on the market today. Even acai berries which were previously touted as a miracle food do not contain the level of antioxidants that maqui berries do.

In addition to helping fight free radicals, maqui berries can also fight inflammation in the body. This can make them an excellent dietary supplement for anyone with arthritis or other inflammatory conditions. They help calm many of the problems related to chronic inflammation and may even be able to help prevent the joints from becoming damaged over time.

Another use for maqui berries is their weight loss properties. They are believed to help the body lose weight more efficiently because they help to rid the body of toxins. Many people feel that if a body is free of toxins, it can burn calories at a much higher rate, and this can help you lose weight much faster. Although it has not been confirmed as a definite weight loss aid, it can be worth taking because of its large beneficial effect in other areas.

Maqui berry juice can be fantastic for your heart as well. The berries and their juice contain anthocyanins and polyphenols, many of the same chemicals which make red wine so good for your system. However, they do not contain the alcohol that red wine does which makes them free of negative side effects.

Maqui berries are fantastic for many of the body’s systems. Including maqui berry juice or maqui berry supplements in your regular diet may be one of the best choices you can make to safeguard and even improve your health.

You can buy acai capsules alongside maqui to give the absolute strongest anti-oxidant supplements.

DIY Home Improvement

Colin Jones | October 18, 2009

It appears that there has been a decline in consumer confidence in the building and construction industry of late. This may be because of the scams highlighted on television or the bribery and corruption endemic in the corporate sector, but it is almost certainly the same motivation why so many are now carrying out home improvements by themselves.

And why shouldn’t they? A little knowledge of the technical aspects combined with an eye for creativity is often enough to complete the home improvement on your own.

Why are people turning to do-it-yourself home improvements?

There are many people attempting to pass themselves off as construction workers, although they do not have a lot of experience in construction or home maintenance and they are literally are out there right now practising, learning their trades on homes like yours and mine around the country.

As a result, homeowners are finding that the jobs are not being finished to their liking. At times they are even pre-paying for services that do not get done or were not part of the arrangement.

You do not have to trust and pay someone to enhance your home. Why not have a go yourself?

You can enhance your home?s existing concrete surfaces using acid stains, acrylic paints, epoxy paints, and scoring techniques.

If you are tired of looking at dull gray concrete, there are some easy projects if you are serious about having a go at home improvement DIY, you can easily give your patio, driveway or garage a refreshing new look.

Decorative concrete work costs about double that of regular concrete, which is why a lot of people cannot afford it.

However, there are cheaper means to beautify concrete after it has cured, without having to pay skilled tradesmen.

Acid-based concrete stains are becoming more and more fashionable for coloring concrete surfaces. They chemically react with the fibres in the cement material to produce permanent color with a variegated or mottled appearance similar to that of marble. This results in a natural, stylish looking surface.

Water-based concrete stains are an alternative to acid stains but are much more user friendly because they are so much less toxic. These stains do not chemically react with the concrete; they are absorbed into the porous surface and act like a colorant. The big advantage of water based stains is the wide range of colors on hand.

If you want to risk going beyond the basic staining of your concrete, consider using some scoring techniques to create patterns on the surface.

You can make your concrete resemble a tiled floor for instance. It is just up to your imagination. A mini angle grinder with a 4 inch grinding wheel is the ideal tool for this.

The important thing to bear in mind when scoring is to draw the pattern on the concrete first and ensure you are content with the way it looks because scoring is irreversible.

Epoxy paints make an excellent coating for garage floors and cellar floors. Many industrial floors have epoxy coatings because of their hardiness and resilience to chemical spills as well as their appearance.

In recent years, however, it has become very popular for domestic use with the availability of an growing number of different colors. This is not a difficult project, but the key to successful application is surface preparation.

Epoxy paints have also become obtainable in a water based form making it safe for the DIY’er and ideal for indoor applications. They cost a little more than stains. For a 400 square foot floor, you’ll spend about $200 for the materials needed for this job.

You see? You do not have to spend big money to improve your home. You have the capacity to do it yourself. With some instructions and a little bit of work, anyone can turn dull concrete into a masterpiece of their own.

Treating Acne Scars

Gail Jones | October 17, 2009

Acne scars are an awful reminder of the having suffered pimples or even acne before. They are intolerable because of their seeming longevity and their non-complimentary appearance. Normally speaking, acne scars are rather hard to eradicate, but tissue regrowth is not impossible these days with all the fantastic technological developments.

In general terms, when referring to acne scarring, we mean the healed lesions caused by an acne breakout. While most scarring is temporary and will probably disappear on its own over time, scars from the more severe forms of acne can become permanent.

Acne scars can be prevented if the sufferer visits a doctor when it is in the incipient stage, particularly if nodules or cysts accompany the red pustules on the skin’s surface. If the bouts of acne have marked your skin, you will have to approach the issue from another perspective, which most of the time involves surgery.

Laser resurfacing is one possibility of removing the damaged skin parts and stimulating the organic regrowth of the tissue underneath. This operation only requires local anaesthesia and can last between a few minutes and an hour depending on the amount of the problem.

Fractional laser therapy is one of the most recent forms of eliminating acne scarring. It involves surgical intervention at deep skin layers. The therapy is better than both dermabrasion and laser resurfacing in terms of quality and involves a very reduced healing period. Nevertheless, fractional laser therapy is within the reach of only those few lucky sufferers, who can pay for it, since it is the most expensive acne treatment available these days.

It can be that further sessions are required to improve the condition of the superficial layers of skin, before they can tackle the deep level treatment of the acne scarring. The doctor may inject collagen into the scarring in order to raise the normal skin level or she/he may recommend micro-dermabrasion for the same reason. Trying to perform chemical peels for acne treatment at home is a bad idea given the risk of aggravating the condition by irritating the scars even further.

As for the kinds of acne scars, they can be classified according to the formation pattern. Scars can result because of an increase of tissue or due to a loss of tissue They both have an adverse impact on the way the face looks. Specialists’ evaluation of the nature of the scars is a very important factor in deciding on the adoption of one kind of treatment or another.

Electronic Bug Zapper

Owen Jones | October 15, 2009

The hand held insect killer is the best way of ridding the area around you of insects, especially the flying ones such as mosquitoes. The indoor insect zapper vaporizes any insect from a mosquito to a gnat instantly on contact with a pleasingly loud, electrical ‘crack’!

However, this does not mean to say that the electric bug zapper cannot be operated outside, as long as it is not too wet. It should be treated like any other high voltage electrical equipment. Keep the hand held bug killer dry and please do not use it while you are standing in water!

Models vary greatly, but there are basically only two types of electric bug zapper: the battery operated bug zapper and the rechargeable electric bug killer. Both are equally effective at killing insects and employ the same principle.

The indoor bug killer looks like a ‘junior’ tennis racket, but with three layers of ‘strings’, which are in fact wires. The innermost network of wires becomes live at the touch of a button while the other two grids, one on either side, are earths.

When an insect is trapped between the wires of the indoor bug zapper, it creates a short, which evaporates it instantaneously with a loud crack. The hand held insect zapper will zap other bugs too, but they tend to burn rather than just disappear.

I have had the rechargeable kind for more than five years and am extremely satisfied with the indoor insect zapper. In fact, the electric bug zapper has come a long way in the last few years. A fully charged electric insect zapper is strong enough to last for several hundred swipes and will hold it’s charge, when unused, for weeks without any appreciable discharge.

The rechargeable battery unit will put up with intensive use for the best part of a year, although its ability to hold a charge for several weeks slowly diminishes after six or seven months.

The most recent indoor insect zapper I’ve had has a main on/off switch, an LED that comes on when it is activated (the brightness of this light also gives an indication of the battery’s strength) and an LED that comes on when it is plugged in for recharge.

The instructions suggest that the bug zapper should be (re)charged for about sixteen hours. However, I usually put it on charge over night once or twice every week or two, although the hand held insect zapper shows a marked increase in performance after only a few hours recharging.

The latest model I’ve seen also comes with a powerful beam called a ‘headlamp’. I have found this very useful when out in the garden, but I’m not sure whether it’s meant to attract the flies in the dark so that you can zap them if you’re bored. You know, like an anglerfish.

I’ve used the headlamp on my indoor insect zapper for that reason as well, but the light uses a lot of battery power. All in all, the electric insect zapper is a huge asset at any outdoor event. The indoor insect killer is useful for ‘clearing’ your bedroom before retiring; it’s unbeatable for killing evening mosquitoes and it will eradicate wasps at a lunch table too.

Have you ever used an indoor bug zapper? If not, or if you want to get an electronic insect killer, please click one of the links to our web site or blog. This and other unique content ” articles are available with free reprint rights.

Acne is Not Spots

Frank Williams | October 5, 2009
by Frank Williams

There are quite a few different forms of acne, depending on how or why the acne developed. Some of the kinds of acne are: acne conglobata (chronic boils); acne fulminans (an extreme form of conglobata); acne cosmetica (caused by cosmetics); acne keloidalis nuchae (from shaving); acne medicamentosa (caused by starting or stopping a medication); acne rosacea (redness on the face); baby acne; hormonal acne; cloracne and the common variety, acne vulgaris (also known as ‘puberty spots’). In this article, we will take a closer look at acne vulgaris.

Acne vulgaris may be defined as: ‘an inflammatory disease of the skin, caused by changes in the pilosebaceous units (skin structures consisting of a hair follicle and its associated sebaceous gland). Acne lesions are commonly referred to as pimples, spots or zits’ (according to Wikipedia).

Acne is most common in white Western teenagers, although it does occur in every country in the world, so there could be a genetic weakness to it. It is possible that it could be an exceptional reaction to quite normal levels of testosterone. For most sufferers, the condition lasts only until adulthood, probably only a few years or at the most ten. For other people, however, it can be a life-long problem. It usually affects the face, upper-chest, upper-arms and back. However, an occasional spot is not the same as acne.

Acne vulgaris manifests itself in many forms, including: whiteheads, resulting from pores which are completely blocked, trapping sebum (oil), bacteria, and dead skin cells, causing a white spot on the top; blackheads, caused by pores which are only partially blocked, allowing some of the trapped sebum, bacteria, and dead skin cells to slowly drain to the surface (the black colour is not caused by dirt, but is a reaction of the skin’s own pigment, melanin, with the oxygen in the air); papules, which are inflamed, red, tender bumps with no head and pustules, which are similar to whiteheads, but are inflamed, and look like red circles with a white or yellow centre.

Whiteheads do not often last for a long time; blackheads do last a long time and pustules are what people call spots or zits. Severe acne vulgaris is characterized by nodules and cysts. A ‘nodule’ is a much larger and more painful kind of pustule and can sometimes last for months. Nodules are large, hard bumps just under the skin’s surface. They frequently cause scarring and should never for any reason be squeezed, since this could cause them to last for months longer.

A ‘cyst’ can appear similar to a nodule, but it is full of pus and has been described as having a diameter of at least 5mm and, again, can leave scars and cause irritation. Squeezing an acne cyst may cause a deeper infection and more painful inflammation which will last very much longer than if it had not been squeezed. Dermatologists have ways of reducing the swelling and avoiding scarring with both nodules and cysts. It is a myth that acne sufferers are not meticulous about washing.

In fact, excessive washing can exacerbate acne. There are many, many useless ‘treatments’ on the market and many, many old wives’ tales. However, any honest skin expert would advise you that there is no sure-fire cure for acne and that the sufferer has to follow a religious regimen of cleansing until the acne just ‘goes away’ of its own accord.
