Retirees and Online Stock Trading

Owen Jones | October 20, 2009

Retirement comes with a benefit and a drawback: more time and less money. The invention of the Internet has brought about many changes in the way we conduct our lives. We can pay our bills online, go shopping online, do our banking online, and even make a date online!

You can also participate in online stock investing, which I think, could fit in nicely. Online stock investors love having the capability to look at their investment accounts whenever they want to, and online stock brokers like having the capability to take orders over the Internet, as opposed to using the telephone.

You start by reading the newspapers and watching the news. Any news items that suggest good news for a company can be followed up by greater research into the company concerned. The majority of stock brokers and brokerage houses now offer online stock research to their customers as well as online stock investing. One other great thing about online stock trading is that fees and commissions are often lower. While online stock trading is great, there are some drawbacks.

If you are a novice to investing, having the ability to actually speak with a stock broker can be very beneficial, if you aren’t stock market conscious, online stock trading may be a rather dangerous thing for you to do, although advice from a stock market trader is expensive. If this is the case, make certain that you learn as much as you can about trading stocks before you start online stock trading. In this case, make sure that you learn as much as you can about researching companies and trading stocks before you start online stock trading for real.

You could control a dummy portfolio. For instance, many online stock brokers offer the chance to run a ‘watch list’ or dummy portfolio, where you can ‘buy and sell’ without risking your pension!

You should also be aware that not everyone has a computer with Internet access on them every minute of the day, although many mobile phones can get online, so you may not always have the ability to go online to make a trade. You will need to be sure that you can call and consult with your broker if you use an online stock broker. This applies whether you are an experienced stock market trader or only a novice.

Furthermore, it is also a good idea for the retiree to open an account with an online stock investing firm that has been around for a long time. Sure, you won’t find one that has been in online business for 30-50 years, but you will find a company that has been in business that long and that now also offers online stock trading.

To be sure, online stock trading is a wonderful opportunity for retirees – but it is not for everyone, the impetuous can lose money quickly. Think carefully before you decide to opt for online stock trading, and make sure that you really know what you are letting yourself in for!

Therefore, in summary, retirees can use their newly-found free time to explore the stock market free by finding leads in newspapers, magazines and news programs. These leads can then be followed up by online research using a free online stock investing account.

These hunches can then be tracked by using a dummy portfolio. When you have gained sufficient experience, you can go ‘live’ by opening an active online stock investing account.

Thought on Home Schooling.

Owen Jones |

Home schooling or homeschooling, if you want (in deed, you even see it hyphenated, as in home-schooling) has been about for about 30 years now, although, of course it was all parents had before state involvement in education. Remote thinly-populated places in large countries like the USA, Canada and Australia still have to rely on home schooling to a large degree, although it is less difficult now with the wide-spread use of radio, television and the Internet. Video packages also have an important role, as do books still.

However, home schooling has become very popular in the cities as an alternative to inner city public schools, which are frequently seen as hotbeds of upheaval, violence and drugs, especially by the middle classes and not without some due reason, to be honest. Nonetheless, there are also other valid reasons for choosing home schooling, which we will go into later.

First, it must be pointed out that the decision to go for home schooling has to be a family one. This is because it will turn “normal family life” on its head and place an added monetary strain on the family purse. For instance, one parent will have to cease working. This cannot be allowed to be a cause of resentment, or both parents could take part-time employment and share the children’s educational time. Whichever way you decide, you will not have two full-time incomes any longer. Working from home on the Internet could be a partial solution here.

Home schooling will also disrupt everyone’s social life. So, the parents’ social life is restricted by not seeing work colleagues every day, but so is little Johnny’s, particularly if he has already spent some time in a normal classroom. He won’t see his pals from class as much and they may drift away from him or even be angry with him.

On the plus side is that the family will become a lot stronger as a unit by studying together at home schooling. Both parents will have a complete knowledge of what their child is learning and will be learning. While maintaining a broad-spectrum education, you may however opt to focus on aspects of, say, history or science, that particularly interest your child. It allows you the freedom to match your child’s education to his or her own interests, something that state education cannot do well with large classes. Your child will also be less under the influence of the rowdier elements in school and be able to concentrate more on studying.

A note of caution may be useful at this point. Do not be tempted to compel your child to learn too rapidly. It is tempting for a non-professional teacher-cum-proud parent in home schooling to push the child much harder than he can go. Remember that most people are only average. You must be on look out for signs of burn-out and bad feeling at all times.

Once you decide to opt for home schooling, you will need to pick a basic programme, go through it yourself to familiarize yourself with it, buy or find in the library any supplementary books, videos and software, make a load of notes and stock up on pens and paper, folders, binders and filing cabinets and you’ll be ready for your first term at home schooling.

The Copperhead

Colin Jones | October 19, 2009

Copperhead snakes are the cause of most of the snake-bite problems in the United States. The copperhead can be distinguished by its thick shape and its neck, which is quite distinct from its body as well as by its pale cross-band tan pattern that darkens in the middle and on the sides.

Copperhead snakes have pale bellies, which makes it look very similar to its background, but their colourisation also be whitish sometimes. There are obvious spots or pits on the head of the copperhead snake that appear like tiny dark specks. There is also a rather vague stripe on its head behind its eyes; less prominent on the top, the stripe gets a lot darker towards the sides of the snake’s head.

Copperhead snakes can be found almost anywhere, from rock and pond areas to woods and the shores of streams. Their choice of habitat is dictated by the predominance of prey, as copperhead snakes live on frogs, small rodents, cicadas, lizards, caterpillars and anything else that cabe taken without too much trouble.

Among the best hide-outs for copperhead snakes, wood piles, stone slabs, walls, debris and abandoned or ruined buildings are the most common, which explains the possibility of a human encounter with them in such areas. Copperhead snakes are most active in the spring and summer months and as long as the weather stays warm, after which they enter the hibernation period.

Copperhead snakes return to the same dens to hibernate year after year, and more often than not, there are large nests counting many individuals during hibernation. On very hot summer days, copperhead snakes will remain in cooler areas during the day and use the cover of the night to hunt. On balmy summer days, the copperhead will lie in the sun on rocks or wooden debris. Copperhead snakes do not hatch eggs, but give birth to their young live. The number of young ranges from one to fourteen and they are usually born from the summer untill October.

The bites of copperhead snakes must have immediate medical care since they are not only very painful but they may also lead to permanent scarring and tissue loss. Avoid copperhead snakes when you come across them, since many people get bitten when trying to kill or handle them.

Snakes will not harm you unless they feel threatened, then, you will become the victim of a fierce attack by a creature that is just as afraid of us as we are of them. Statistics reveal that copperhead snakes have the highest incidence in bite frequency in the United States, because these snakes attack quite out of the blue without giving threatening warnings like other species.

Learning History at Home Schooling

Marion Jones |

Do you consider that spending time in traditional classrooms is a waste of time? For many people, that is probably true. For example, a test is due and the students are asked to memorize a lot of dates and names. However, after taking the exam, they will probably forget 90% of those dates and names. That’s what the majority of students do when they have exams. If you are one of these people, you will find traditional history lessons boring, so home schooling, which focuses more on the history of the world, will probably interest you more.

Simple memorization is not enough to know the importance of famous people and important events. Through home schooling in history, you can learn about the different cultures of the past in a different, but interesting way – your own way! Through the study of history, you will also understand the current situation of the world today.

But, if you consider that home schooling is the best option for your child’s learning, you should also be prepared to undertake certain responsibilities. As there will be no teacher physically present, you will have to supervise your child’s educational progress by yourself.

Let’s just suppose that your kid is interested in a particular sport. Through combining history and home schooling, you could start by just putting a map on the wall of your child’s bedroom and mark the location of his favourite sports team. Make sure that you track all the team’s activities and schedules. Then, you could go back to history lessons by reading biographies of the different athletes, who had been popular in the particular sport that your child likes. Apart from that, you can also examine the history of that specific sport and discover where it started, its inventor, and the other things happening at that particular time in history.

For example, if your child loves baseball, you can teach your child about the history of Negro Leagues, government hearings on the use of steroids, and other favourite hobbies at that time. Just remember that you can apply this concept to any interest such as dances and inventions. You can also have conversations with your child concerning current affairs or read interesting historical works and other books. Aside from that, you could also watch documentaries together with the rest of the family. There are various resources that your child can use in home schooling, such as TV, maps, books, a globe, an atlas, and encyclopedias. Due of the exciting adventures that you and your child will read about and see on film, he/she will find it easier to remember the names and dates of the history lessons. After all, education is better when it is done in a fun way.

These methods are recommended if the child is still young, however once your child gets older, you should choose a home schooling program that is suitable for his/her age group. The programs are available at the elementary, high school, and even college levels. You just have to search online for these different programs. One advantage of these programs is that you can tailor them to fit the interests of your child. However, you have to see to it that all the modules are learned by your child.

After you and your child decide to give home schooling a go, you must be ready to endure some changes to your lifestyle. The educational will now take place in your home not at a remote school and through the various resources that you want to use, which should include a computer and the Internet.

Home Movie Theater Lighting

Marion Jones |

Light fixtures are things that not many of us think about very often. However, the way we light a room can cause us to feel a certain way or enhance the atmosphere we want to create in that room. There are many types of light fixtures, fittings, bulbs, shades and stands to suit all areas of the home. That means both indoors and even outdoors where you might want to emphasize some special landscaping design.

Are you planning to redo a room? In this case, I know it concerns a home movie theater room, but it could be any room. I think that you should definitely consider light fixtures as one element to change. For example, you could start by changing the central, overhead incandescent bulb or tube light for sure.

My suggestion would be to install four or even six small wall-lights; these are not expensive and come in hundreds of colours and sizes to suit any pocket. The only drawback with wall lighting for your home theater, is that the wires would really have to be chased into the wall so as not to appear unsightly.

But, you could get around this by buying standard lamps. These are also available in thousands of designs, but they come with two disadvantages: trailing wires and a higher cost. They are easily moveable though. Small, table lamps is a similar alternative, but you may need more electrical sockets.

Once you have decided exactly on what style you want, have a dimmer attached to each either in unison or separately, as you like. You should probably keep one reasonably powerful light at the DVD end of the room just in case the equipment needs seeing to, but it too could be on a dimmer.

The effect can be really stunning. And all from just changing the existing light fixtures and fittings. You could even go the whole hog and have an exit sign over the door or a few speciality lamps higher up out of line of sight, so that they are not distracting, say, an old 1970s style lunar lamp and a fibre-optic lamp, for amusement or as a talking point while waiting for the film or snacks to be prepared.

So, whatever style home theater lighting you are thinking of, contemporary or old style traditional, you will find many options to pick from – from different colors to different sizes and styles, there are many. You can find them on the Internet or in home improvement stores. I have made a link to one of my online favourites below.

Furthermore, when you do implement the changes, you will notice that your home theater has taken on an ambiance all of its own and it will “definitely” enhance your home movie theater experience. In fact, it may be these subtle changes, room by room, that make you see your home in a very different light.
